Sweetcorn Season

What says summer more than sweetcorn?! Sweetcorn season is finally in full swing here in Central Wisconsin. I love seeing trucks of sweetcorn parked at gas stations and roadside stands advertising honey-dipped sweetcorn. (There is no actual honey involved, just a sweet variety of corn named Honey Dipped.) And you know it is the heat of summer when the Flyte Family Farm stands are open with all of their homegrown goodies. Have you ever tried a kohlrabi? These metal-roofed open-air stands are open for strawberry season early in the summer. They then tend to close down until more produce is available. Just last week I saw that ours here in Necedah was open with their sweet corn sign out! Yay!

The family farm is located just down the road a bit in Coloma, Wisconsin. Their roadside stands are in Mauston by Log Cabin Deli and Necedah on Highway 21 by the railroad tracks across from Old Mill Park.

The Farmers' Markets have been open for a while. Farmers have had herbs, jam, plants & flowers, and honey available. And we do have some local farmers with early produce from their greenhouses. However, now tables are filling up with juicy tomatoes and those fresh cucumbers that still have the little bumps and spikes on them. Do you know what I'm talking about? They are not all waxy like the grocery store ones; you can tell these were just picked this morning!

I haven't gotten a chance to get to the Farmer's Market in Hillsboro yet (right in the Hillsboro Brewery parking lot), but I do enjoy chatting with the vendors and getting fresh tomatoes at the Mauston Farmers Market and the Camp Douglas Farmers Market. I hope you can get to one of these markets and get a taste of summer soon!

Here is a list of Farmer's Markets to help:

Mauston - Tuesday 2-6 & Saturday 7-sold out or Noon - at the Courthouse Lawn in downtown Mauston

Camp Douglas - Sundays 11-2 at 129 Mainstreet Camp Douglas (the smallest town with the biggest Farmer's Market and a beautiful bluff backdrop)

Hillsboro Farmers' Market - every other Sunday 11-2 at the Hillsboro Brewing Company, 206 E. Madison Street

New Lisbon - Everyday - Black Bear Fruit's Honor Stand is open at N7832 County Road M, New Lisbon, WI

Flyte Family Farm - Mauston (behind Log Cabin Deli at 517 Gateway Avenue) and Necedah near the corner of Highway 80 & 21 (the only stop light in town)
